A l’image des cinq dernières minutes ou de Colombo, l’énigme trouve toujours sa solution à la fin. Mais à l’opposé de Colombo où la morale est toujours la même :
le crime ne paie pas, cette série propose à chaque fois un contexte différent, plus philosophique qu’apocalyptique, du genre « le véritable héros est celui qui est capable de sacrifier sa vie pour les autres, tout en sachant que jamais ils ne le sauront » (le voyage sans retour), tirade qui pourrait être encore plus explicite de la manière suivante :
« le véritable héros, serait celui qui donnerait sa vie dans d’atroces et interminables souffrances, en ayant au préalable le temps de la réflexion, le tout au profit de l’humanité entière, tout en sachant néanmoins que nul ne le saura jamais »...

Un comble !

Au-delà de ces paraboles philosophiques, et à part quelques épisodes repris dans les 49 épisodes de la série de 1963 à 1965, ce sont des scénarii originaux, avec des effets spéciaux introduits juste quand il le faut.
L’histoire est ainsi privilégiée, offrant la part belle aux acteurs, et à leur talent quasi exclusif.

L’action peut se situer n’importe où (terre, espace, planètes,...) et concerner tous les thèmes imaginables (conquête spatiale, mutation, recherche biologique, amour virtuel, condition humaine...)
