Le lac Italien d’AVERNE, en CAMPANIE, est connu pour exhaler des vapeurs méphitiques. Il constituerait peut-être une des entrées potentielles des enfers.

Le tunnel

Le « moulin du diable » est situé près de GUERANDE, et fut construit par le diable lui-même, en échange d’un pacte étrange avec un paysan. Ce dernier ayant inséré la Vierge Marie dans un creux de sa bâtisse, le démon fuya alors dans un vortex de feu et de soufre.

Les scénaristes affectionnent les cavernes, lieux patentés du diable, monstres, incubes, gnomes et dragons, et les y insèrent abondamment dans leurs écrits.
